Social Class & Landscape
Plage des Catalans, Marseille
29 May 2025
Social Class & Landscape is an exhibition and research project for students at the ADBK Munich from 2024 to 2026. Starting from the socially deeply rooted hierarchical division of private and public space, we are looking at architectural and landscape markers in our everyday environment that illustrate social class differences and economic contexts they have grown out of, as well as caused and upheld. Deepening class divisions around the world in the wake of landscape shifts caused by climate change and the transforming concept of labour in late capitalism, as well as the reproduction of structural hierarchies and privileges of physical reality in digital space, make this an acute topic for investigation. The project includes a programme of lectures and workshops at ADBK Munich, as well as excursions to Marseille culminating in a pop-up exhibition at Plage des Catalans, a popular urban beach where different cultures, classes and generations mingle. Guest speakers in Munich in-cluded curators Gürsoy Doğtaş and Stefan Kalmár, as well as the artists Michael Dean, Julia Retz and Sung Tieu. We would like to thank them as well as Claudia Escudé for the tour through the Cité Radieuse and Inge Linder-Gaillard and Anaïs Déléage for hosting us at École supérieure d‘art et de design Marseille-Méditerranée.
